How to Choose a Registered Electrical Inspector

A registered electrical inspector can still be the wrong inspector for your installation. Registration proves that a person has met the requirements for the profession, but it does not mean they are authorised or experienced in every specialist area of electrical work.

That distinction matters. A domestic property with standard wiring is not assessed in the same way as a solar installation, a medical facility or equipment used in a hazardous area. Choosing carefully begins with identifying what needs to be inspected, then matching the job to the inspector’s actual authority and experience.

Start with the installation, not the inspector

Before searching for a name, describe the work as precisely as possible. Is the inspection for a new house, a switchboard replacement, a photovoltaic system, a generator, a commercial building or a high-risk industrial site? The answer determines what kind of inspector you need.

For an ordinary residential installation, a registered Electrical Inspector with a current practising licence may be suitable. More specialised work requires closer checking. Photovoltaic systems, mains-parallel generation, high-voltage installations, hazardous areas and medical locations can all require an endorsed registration class. A general Electrical Inspector does not automatically cover these categories.

This is an easy mistake to make because the word “registered” sounds broader than it is. Think of it like a driving licence: holding one does not mean the driver is qualified to operate every type of vehicle in every environment. The same logic applies to electrical inspection.

Ask the inspector whether they have personally dealt with installations like yours, not merely whether they have inspected electrical work before. Someone who mainly assesses household wiring may not be the right choice for a battery system in a commercial building or equipment installed in a hazardous location.

Check the EWRB record and practising licence

In New Zealand, verify the inspector in the official Electrical Workers Registration Board register. Check both the registration and the current practising licence. These are separate details, and the licence must be current when the inspector carries out the work.

The register should be the starting point rather than a final formality. Confirm that the person is listed as an Electrical Inspector, then look for any relevant endorsements or registration classes. If the public record does not make the scope clear, ask the inspector to explain exactly what their registration permits them to inspect.

A person who once held the right registration but no longer has a current practising licence should not be treated as available for the job. The same caution applies when someone describes themselves as an inspector but cannot provide a registration number or a clear record in the official register. A confident answer is not a substitute for verification.

The professional requirements themselves are substantial. Registration as an Electrical Inspector involves approved written and practical examinations, along with at least three years or 6,000 hours of relevant experience. Those requirements provide a useful baseline, but they do not tell you whether the inspector has worked with your particular type of installation recently.

That is why the register and a short conversation belong together. The register confirms status. Your questions establish fit.

Look closely at specialist endorsements

Some installations carry risks that a standard inspection does not address. Solar photovoltaic equipment may feed power back into the electrical network. Parallel generation systems can involve generators, inverters and controls that behave differently from a conventional supply. High-voltage work introduces another level of danger, while hazardous areas may contain flammable gases, vapours or dust that affect the equipment and inspection process.

Medical locations require special care as well. A fault that might be inconvenient in an office can have much more serious consequences in a medical cardiac protected area. The inspector must understand both the electrical rules and the reason those rules are stricter there.

Rules applying from 2025 place clear limits on what an ordinary Electrical Inspector may inspect without the appropriate authorisation. Work in mining operations, hazardous areas, medical cardiac protected areas and mains-parallel generation systems requires the relevant endorsement. Do not assume that an inspector who can assess a standard installation can also sign off one of these systems.

Ask a direct question: “Does your registration include the endorsed class required for this installation?” A suitable inspector should be able to answer without hesitation and explain how the endorsement relates to the work. If the response is vague, move on to someone who can demonstrate the right authority.

For a complex project, it is sensible to ask for examples of similar inspections. The inspector does not need to disclose confidential client details, but they should be able to describe the type of system, the main hazards and the standards or requirements they had to consider. Specific experience sounds specific. General reassurance usually does not.

Use the high-risk database when the address matters

For high-risk installations, check the property address in the Electricity and Gas High-risk Database. The free database contains records of completed inspections and can help you establish whether inspection activity has been recorded for the site.

This does not replace hiring a qualified inspector, and an entry in the database is not a guarantee that every part of an installation is safe today. Electrical systems change. Equipment is replaced, extensions are added and faults can develop after an earlier inspection. Still, the database gives you useful background before arranging a new inspection.

It can also help uncover a gap in the site history. If a high-risk installation has no expected record, ask why. Perhaps the work has not yet been inspected, the address has been entered differently or the relevant documentation is incomplete. That question is worth asking before energising equipment or accepting a handover.

Keep the inspection paperwork with the property records. A clear file should include the address, the date, the inspector’s details, the scope of the inspection and any defects or conditions identified. Years later, those details can be more valuable than anyone expects, particularly when a building changes hands or further electrical work is planned.

Ask what the inspection actually includes

A price is useful only after the scope is clear. Two inspectors can quote different amounts because they are offering different services. One may inspect only the newly installed equipment; another may examine associated switchgear, protection, earthing, labelling and documentation as well.

Ask what the inspector will inspect, what they will not inspect and what access they need. Find out whether the system must be isolated, whether test results will be recorded and what document you will receive at the end. If defects are found, ask whether the report will distinguish between immediate safety concerns, compliance issues and items that should be monitored.

A careful inspector should be willing to explain the process in plain English. You do not need to become an electrician to make a good decision. You do need enough information to understand what is being checked and what a pass or failure means.

Independence matters too. Be cautious if the person inspecting the work is also under pressure to approve their own installation or to protect a commercial relationship. An inspection should be an impartial assessment, not a rubber stamp. Ask who arranged the inspection, who receives the report and whether the inspector is free to identify defects without influence from the installer.

If the work is in the United States or another jurisdiction using NFPA 70, also check the local licensing rules rather than assuming New Zealand requirements apply. For people seeking a specialist credential connected with the National Electrical Code, the IAEI Certified Electrical Inspector programme may be relevant. That programme requires at least 4,000 hours of electrician experience or 2,000 hours as an inspector, and the certification is renewed every three years. It is an additional credential, not a universal replacement for the authority required in the jurisdiction where the inspection takes place.

The best choice is usually not the cheapest name on a list. It is the inspector whose current authority matches the installation, whose recent experience matches the risk and whose report will leave you with a clear record of what was examined. A five-minute register check and a few precise questions can prevent a much longer dispute after the power is turned on.
